Self-care is something that you know you need to be focusing on more, but it’s a big task and you already have so many big tasks as a caregiver. Break up the goals on your list and focus on one at a time.
Take Care of Your Physical Needs
Focusing on your physical needs is a good start. How well you’re sleeping, whether you’re moving, and what you’re eating all factor in and support the rest of what you need to be doing. If you can’t do anything else, get those physical needs assessed and make the improvements you can make. Go to your own doctor if you haven’t been in a while. Once you’re doing better physically, you can start to take other steps.
Your Emotional Needs Are Important, Too
Your emotional health and well-being are just as important as your physical health. You may find that as you take better care of yourself physically, you start to feel a little better emotionally. Something else that can help is to have someone to talk to about how you’re feeling. Depending on your situation, that might be a family member, a friend, or even a therapist. Take whatever steps you need to take in order to make improvements in your emotional health.
Give Yourself Time Away from Caregiving
Something else you need to do for yourself is to give yourself time away from being a caregiver now and again. You’re always going to be concerned about your senior’s well-being, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t take an afternoon or a full day off regularly. Doing so allows you to recharge your internal batteries a bit. You get a chance to focus just on yourself for a little while. Then, when you do get back, you’re going to be in a much better position to be a caregiver.
Find Help with Anything That’s Getting Difficult
If you’re avoiding getting help, that’s a problem, too, and it’s going to hinder you as a caregiver. Everybody needs help now and again, even the best caregiver. Having help from home care providers and other family members allows you to outsource the tasks that are too much for you or that are taking up your time and energy when those need to go elsewhere. As you get better asking for help, you’re going to get help more consistently.
Tackle your plan at your own pace. You might feel tempted to rush into making changes, but that could actually cause you to trip up. Focus on one set of improvements and then you can tackle another.
